Qualcomm Stadium, located at 9449 Friars Road, San Diego, CA
92108, was built in 1968 for $27 million and went through a renovation
project in 1997 that cost $78 million. The stadium itself is owned
and managed by the city of San Diego, and the majority of the funds
($60 million) for the renovation were financed through the sale
of bonds. The other $18 million was funded through the sale of
the naming rights to the facility to Qualcomm Corp. over a 20-year
period that started in 1997. Formerly Jack Murphy Stadium, Qualcomm has a natural
grass field and has played host to more than one sport. The San Diego Padres
played at Qualcomm Stadium from 1969 through the 2003 season before they moved
into nearby PETCO Park.
The San Diego Sockers of the NASL also played at Qualcomm
for a few years. Now, the San Diego Chargers are the biggest attraction at
the stadium, and the San Diego State Aztecs also play their home games there
during their college season. During baseball season, the stadium could hold
over 67,500 people, and for football, the stadium brings out a few retractable
seats bringing the capacity to more than 71,000 people. Qualcomm also built
113 luxury suites and almost 8,000 club level seats for the fans. For the
season ticket holders, Qualcomm has provided access to the Chargers
Gold Club, a service that offers personal service at their seat
and allows them access to air conditioned facilities located throughout
the park. The stadium also offers parking spaces for 19,000 automobiles,
bus service to and from the stadium, and seven different points
on entrance to Qualcomm, including entrance almost directly off
of any of four different highways, so there isn’t as much traffic as other stadiums.
Qualcomm Stadium also hosted Super Bowl XXXII in January of 1998.
