Sun Devil Stadium, located on the Arizona State University campus
at Fifth Street, Tempe, AZ 85287, is the home to the NFL’s
Arizona Cardinals and the Arizona State University Sun Devils football
team. The Stadium was built in 1958 and only cost $1 million, all
of which was publicly financed. Both Arizona teams that played
in the now extinct USFL played at Sun Devil Stadium from 1983-1985.
Sun Devil Stadium can hold more than 73,500 people with 68 skyboxes
and almost 5,000 club level seats. The ticket prices are slightly
lower than the league average, but many fans will argue that roasting
in the heat of the Arizona sun more than makes up for it. The preseason
games are played in temperatures that can exceed 120 degrees in
the stands (even hotter on the field itself), and most of the regular
season games are played in the early afternoon when the heat is
at its peak.
The Cardinals have played in Sun Devil Stadium since they moved
to the area in 1988 and they’re the only team that plays
their home games at a college campus. Prior to being
in Arizona, the Cardinals played in St. Louis in Busch Stadium
along with the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball. The
team continued to push for a baseball only stadium, but the city
of St. Louis wasn’t willing to finance the stadium, so the
team moved west. They’ve shared the field with the Sun Devils,
but with the college team playing Saturdays, the field is a little
torn up when the Cardinals show up on Sunday. Since the Cardinals
have moved in, the field has undergone renovations to include the
video boards, seating, and private suites that accompany an NFL-style
stadium. The team is currently working on a stadium
that should be ready by the 2006 season. The new stadium will be
for the Cardinals only and will feature a retractable roof along
with all the usual amenities.
