Texas Stadium, located at 2401 East Airport Freeway, Irving,
TX 75062, has been the home of the Dallas Cowboys since 1971. Prior
to Texas Stadium, the Cowboys played in the Cotton Bowl for 11
years. Texas Stadium is owned by the city of Irving and used an
artificial playing surface instead of grass for a long period before
making the switch to the new and improved Fieldturf surface. The
city passed a bond in order to publicly raise the $35 million needed
to finance the construction of Texas Stadium. In addition to the
Dallas Cowboys and the NFL, Texas Stadium also plays host to the
state championship of high school football in Texas. Texas Stadium
has been the home of the team in each of their five Super Bowl
championships, including a Super Bowl VI victory in the stadium’s
first season. The stadium can hold almost 66,000 people and features
379 luxury suites for the fans. The Cowboys are one of the most
popular teams in football and even in all of sports so the vast
majority of home games result in sellouts.
Texas Stadium is unique
in the fact that the stadium is only partially domed,
with a hole in the center of the dome. This feature allows the
fans to stay out of the possibly inclement weather while keeping
the outdoor atmosphere alive. Texas Stadium also was one of the
first stadiums to offer many of the amenities that other stadiums
have now, like the jumbo video boards and scoreboards, the luxury
suites, and the stadium club where fans can gather for parties
and other occasions. The Dallas Cowboys have been one of the most
successful and popular teams of the NFL over the last 15 years
so they’ve had more
television exposure on their city and stadium. Fans across the
nation and in other parts of the world have seen the Ring of Honor
and the famous Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders on television, and almost
any true fan of football has made at least one “pilgrimage” to
their very own Mecca, the one and only Texas Stadium.
